Your bedroom is your own personal retreat in your home. It should look and feel like a breath of fresh air when you walk into it. Doing so, however, is not always easy. We recently had the opportunity to ask designers Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander for the inside scoop on their beautiful and creative bedroom design. Take their advice and use this bedroom inspiration to create a beautiful design of your own.
BDMS: What was the inspiration for this space?
The elegance of the head board with the button tufted detail was the inspiration for the room. All the elements that came after were based on that choice.
BDMS: What are your tips for making a bedroom look luxurious but still comfortable?
The head board wall should have a great head board with a bed surround in the same material. Behind that, install a wall covering that speaks to the luxuriousness of the space and the feeling you want to the room to have. Is it a brocade wall covering, a mural of a natural place or a texture like a grass cloth or lace? There is no wrong answer but each one evokes another feeling. Have sumptuous linens on the bed. I recommend euro shams, shams, pillows cases and toss cushions. Have draperies that coordinate with the linens and toss cushions. Install night side tables (they don’t have to match) with night side table lamps, a chair and voila – a sumptuous room!
BDMS: Why did you choose the graphic treatment for the walls?
The graphic treatment not only focuses the head board wall (the bed is the main focus of any bedroom) but it enhances the button tufting of the headboard.
BDMS: What type of flooring do you prefer to use in a bedroom like this one?
Here I would use a combination of finishes for an idea look: A rich hardwood with an area rug under the bed, large enough that acts as carpet on either side of the bed and the end of the bed. You could also have a wall to wall carpet in this room and still have a successful feeling in general.
